Simplified Lay Kimono
$385
Lay practitioners may choose either the traditional kimono, or this simplified version, which was developed to offer a more economical option for wearing with lay robes. It is constructed without okumi or uchiage (waist folds), making it quicker to sew. Side pleats can be added to provide additional fabric coverage in front when sitting cross-legged (read more here).
While it is traditional to wear kimono with an obi—and it is my experience that you will still get the best fit and most secure collar by wearing one—it has also become standard in North America to put ties on simplified lay kimono instead. (The default version comes without ties.)
